220 former MMDCEs declare support for Bawumia's 2028 flagbearership bid
A coalition of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who served under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration between 2017 and 2024 has declared support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to become the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 presidential elections.
At a press conference held on Monday, June 23 at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, the group, operating under the banner “Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr Bawumia,” publicly endorsed the former Vice President, describing their backing as both “strong and unshaken.”
“Following extensive consultations with all aspirants, and after a thorough assessment of their vision, competence and commitment to the NPP’s progress, we are convinced beyond any doubt that Dr Bawumia is the best candidate to lead the NPP to victory in 2028,” the group stated.
Their endorsement, they emphasised, is not symbolic but operational. With many of them having served as constituency and regional executives, some for over 16 years, they said they understand the party’s electoral machinery intimately and would actively leverage their grassroots networks to promote Dr Bawumia’s message across all 16 regions.
The former MMDCEs lauded Dr Bawumia’s track record in public service, particularly his role in spearheading Ghana’s digital transformation through initiatives such as the Ghana Card, Mobile Money Interoperability and the Paperless Port system. “His analytical, data-driven approach to governance ensures that policies are evidence-based and impactful, a critical need for Ghana’s next phase of development,” they said.
Describing him as both a unifier and a grassroots mobiliser, they noted that Dr Bawumia’s inclusive leadership style, accessibility and humility have endeared him to various factions within the party and among the electorate. “He has proven this trait severally in his approach within the party,” they said.
They also argued that Dr Bawumia’s broad national appeal, established during the 2024 campaign, gives the NPP a strategic head start going into the 2028 elections. “His name is known by all, his image can be identified by all, his vision for Ghana is clear to all,” they stated, adding that his candidacy reduces the risk of introducing a fresh, unknown face.
The forum pledged to mobilise supporters at the grassroots, engage in door-to-door campaigning, counter misinformation with facts, and provide logistical and fundraising support to drive Dr Bawumia’s campaign. “We are not just endorsing—we are activating our networks,” they said.
They described Dr Bawumia as a candidate who represents the right balance between continuity and innovation, capable of consolidating past gains while introducing new ideas to modernise the economy.
Their declaration comes days after 67 NPP Members of Parliament publicly endorsed Dr Bawumia’s candidacy, further solidifying his position as a frontrunner in the party’s upcoming primaries, scheduled for January 31, 2026.
In closing, the former MMDCEs called on all party delegates and members to rally behind Dr Bawumia “for a united, victorious, and progressive NPP.”
