Election ‘blues’ at Klottey Korle as Nii Noi wins NPP primary

The election ‘blues’ in the Klottey Korle Constituency came to an end as Valentino Nii Noi Nortey ‘beat’ Philip Kojo Addo Addison and Samuel Nii Adjei Tawiah by a wide margin to win the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary ticket.

Nii Noi pulled 393 votes to floor the two other contestants, who managed to garner 22 and 19 votes respectively.

Out of a total number of 850 delegates, 440 cast their ballots, while 410 did not exercise their franchise.

Mr Addison and Nii Adjei Tawiah earlier boycotted the process because they wanted the elections to be postponed.

Despite the boycott, the Electoral Commission (EC) went ahead to hold the elections in the constituency.

This was after Mr Addison and Nii Adjei Tawiah’s supporters had protested fiercely calling for the elections in the constituency to be postponed for lack of transparency in the process.

The situation led to the arrest of one of the supporters, but that did not deter them to register their displeasure at the process.

Anger

Earlier in an interview, Nii Adjei Tawiah and Mr Addison explained that they had the information regarding the voting in the constituency late, so they pleaded for the elections to be rescheduled for a later date.

This is not the first time the primary in the constituency has been fraught with confusion.

Last week, NPP delegates in the constituency, who turned up in their numbers to vote, were left to their fate as the electoral officer, who was supposed to supervise the exercise, did not turn up.

According to the EC, it was served with a letter from the court a day before the exercise to the effect that the constituency elections be suspended temporarily due to an injunction that six party supporters had filed, claiming that during the vetting process one of the contestant, Nii Noi Nortey, presented a fake certificate to the effect that he was an old student of the University of Ghana.

The delegates and supporters of the three contestants waited at the Osu Presby Park, where the elections were supposed to take place from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. when they left the centre.

The contestants, Mr Addison, Mr Nii Noi Nortey and Mr Adjei Tawiah, were all present at the venue when they were informed that the election would no longer take place.
