Paul Afoko- NPP Chairman

NPP Parliamentary primaries: Afoko wants delegates to elect winning candidates

The National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP),  Mr Paul Awentami Afoko, has challenged party delegates to consider only political power in the selection of parliamentary candidates.

"Your only consideration in the selection of parliamentary candidates should be how the person can win us more votes in both parliamentary and presidential elections," he told a gathering of NPP faithful in Takoradi last Friday.

Background

The NPP has set June 13, 2015, to organise the party’s parliamentary primaries across the country.

It will be recalled that the NPP took a  sharp U-turn in its attempt to allow female MPs to go uncontested by male aspirants following internal party hue and cry.

The  National Council (NC) of the party therefore varied the road map leading to the parliamentary primaries  and fixed  April 30 for the close of nominations. It also fixed May 4 to May 7 for the vetting of the aspirants and May 8 for the announcement of the results.

The aspirants have the opportunity to submit their views of the vetting  to the regional offices on May 11, and if there were residual matters, they could be submitted to the national office for adjudication  on May 13, 2015.

The NC also approved  May 19, 2015 for the publication of the notice of polls  in all the 275 constituencies in the country for the elections to take place on June 13.

New Plan for Power

Mr Afoko, who is currently touring regional capitals with the General Secretary, Mr Kwabena Agyepong, to roll out the “New Plan for Power”, assured the 'front line soldiers' of his readiness to steer the affairs of the party to victory 2016.

He also called on party officials to be united and eschew tendencies that had the potential of dividing the rank and file of the party at the constituency levels.

Mr Afoko called on all to be united for a purpose because in his estimation, Ghanaians were calling on the NPP to save Ghana from the gross economic mismanagement by the National Democratic Congress.

Mr Agyepong called for greater discipline in the party.

He cautioned members who run to the media with the aim of running another party member down, to be careful because, “the National Council has drawn the line and will apply punitive actions.”
