Addressing the Ashanti regional executives and supporters of the party in Kumasi yesterday, Nana Akufo-Addo disclosed: “I will break my silence on whether I will contest the flagbearership position of the party or not on March 20, 2014 in Accra.”

He, however, insisted that as custom demanded, he was still briefing elders of the party and some senior persons in society about his trip abroad, and added that ''my decision will be in the interest of the NPP and Ghanaians in general.”

Meetings with elders

He said he had already met former President J.A. Kufuor and briefed him about his intentions and sojourn in UK and met the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.  He said he had the blessings of the Otumfuo. He would also consult others before making his intentions clear on March 20, 2014 at a press conference in Accra.

No preferred candidate

Regarding the national executive elections to be held in Tamale, Nana Akufo-Addo asked the party members to vote for candidates of their choice and avoid anything that would affect the unity of the party.

He made it clear that he did not support or have any list of candidates he preferred, and added that the NPP tradition was built on democracy and unity. He, therefore,  urged all those who contested various positions in the party recently to see themselves as one family and support the leadership of the party.

Ghanaians suffering

He also said Ghanaians were suffering under the current administration and yearning for the NPP to be in power so the party must remain united.

After addressing the party supporters, Nana Akufo-Addo and his entourage went on a procession through some principal streets of Kumasi. Due to the massive crowd, especially at Kejetia and Adum, Nana Akufo-Addo had to stand on top of his vehicle.

The market women could be heard shouting ''No Nana, no vote'' and ''We tell Nana that John Mahama has stolen free education''.
