Akufo-Addo must show financial sanity in NPP

The flag bearer of the Independent People’s Party (IPP), Mr Kofi Apaloo has challenged the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to show leadership in financial management if he is to lead the country in 2017.

‘’Since he abhors corruption at all levels, Nana Akufo-Addo should step in to ensure that financial sanity prevails in his party,” Mr Apaloo stated.

Background

The NPP in recent times has been engaged in internal wrangling over alleged diversion of party funds into a ‘secret’ account.

This has led to a member of the party formally requesting the police to investigate the party’s finances.

This also has engendered a lot of arguments on the airwaves resulting in the flag bearer calling on party members to cease radio campaigns  and resort to internal mechanism to resolve party differences.

Mr Apaloo, who was commenting on the supposed diversion of funds in the NPP in an interview, explained that the party funds were public funds and therefore belonged to the state.

He, therefore, called on the flag bearer of the NPP not only to condemn the said diversion of party funds into a ‘secret’ account but to allow those involved to face disciplinary action.

Challenge

Mr Apaloo, leader and founder of the Independent People’s Party(IPP), who threw the challenge, noted that if Nana Akufo-Addo was going to lead the nation, he should show leadership.

‘’Nana should step in as soon as possible and let the law take its course,‘’ Mr Apaloo stressed.

He explained that it was not wrong for internal party issues, especially concerning finances  to be settled in court and the public domain.

Public funds

He said  these were public funds and not private funds and every Ghanaian had the right to discuss and seek redress in the court.

He said it was, therefore, wrong for supporters of the vice chairman to allude to the fact that these were internal party matters and ought to be treated like a family matter without allowing non-family members to comment.

Principle

Mr Apaloo said the same principle applied to churches where the contribution of the congregation was not only for the pastor but the church and state and could not be misapplied.

He said the church was more or less like a political party, saying all members should have to be accountable in a political party.
