Out of this number, the eligibility of 5,058 was challenged.

Briefing the Daily Graphic after the registration exercise, the Ashanti Region Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr Sereboe Quaicoe, described the exercise as “successful” despite the pockets of isolated incidents which were being handled by the security agencies.

Explaining further, he said the first phase saw the registration of 84,808 new voters , while the second five days recorded 102,838 persons.

Populated area

Reacting to complaints by some students and authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)  about the fact that just one registration centre was opened on campus, Mr Quaicoe explained that two other registration centres were added to the one at the Business Centre to make them three during the second phase.

He explained further that the initial decision was taken to place just one registration centre on campus because 60 per cent of the students on campus were not residents, hence the move to place the centres at areas such as Kotei, Ayiduase, Kentinkrono and Gyinyase, where the students reside.

Violence

He said there were isolated cases of violence at three centres namely Gyinyase where some thugs destroyed election materials, while at Kentinkrono some materials were also destroyed, but at Asokore Mampong, they destroyed three tables and chairs.

Mr Quaicoe said none of the data captured was affected or destroyed because they were transmitted.

He said he was confident that the police would put those arrested before court and prosecute them to serve as deterrent to others who might engage in such violent acts.

Initial glitches

He stated that the initial problem with dates on the voters’ cards issued to registrants that were recorded during the first phase would be corrected during the exhibition period but the data on the machines were corrected that very day.
