Assembly member donates to PWDs

The Assembly member of the Ogbojo electoral area in the Adentan municipality, Mrs Gladys Addo Osei, has donated five wheel chairs to Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in her electoral area.

She made the donation through her Maralitha Care Foundation (MCF), a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), which offers support to the vulnerable in society.

Apart from the wheelchairs, the group also presented clothing, books and shoes to young mothers and children.

Presenting the items, Mrs Osei said as a representative of the people in the municipality, it was not  only her duty to champion their needs but “I also have a duty to provide relief to people especially the most vulnerable.’’

She said the long term vision of the NGO was to empower the vulnerable in society such as PWDs, young mothers and widows to enable them to support themselves.

“As an organisation, we are working around the clock to solicit  assistance and very soon, God willing, we will provide such groups with employable and entrepreneurial skills to enable them to get access to jobs and also create jobs,’’ she said.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, one of the beneficiaries of the wheelchairs, Mr Eric Azumah urged the political party that will win the December 7 election not to forget PWDs, especially, in the implementation of its job creation policies.

He noted that it was not only able bodied persons that needed jobs to survive, but PWDs as well in order to support themselves and their families.

He said PWDs were ready and willing to work when given the support and provided with the necessary opportunities.

“Whoever becomes President after the December 7 polls must provide an enabling economic environment where PWDs will get access to jobs or be able to engage in their own businesses,’’ he said.

Mr Azumah said PWDs had the potential to contribute massively to the economic growth of the country , as such policy makers ought to come up with a holistic policy that would tap into such potentials.

“Even though we are physically challenged, we are capable of working and contributing our quota to national development,’’ he said.

Apart from policy makers, he also called on corporate bodies and individuals to support PWDs with jobs and employable skills.
