Bad press made UEW stronger - Afful-Broni

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Rev. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni, has said the bad press the university received this year has made the institution even stronger.

Speaking at the matriculation ceremony for fresh students of the 2019-2020 regular academic year of the College of Technology Education, Kumasi Campus (COLTEK) of the university last Saturday, he admitted that the university had gone through some turbulent times recently but noted that it was making strides.

“The UEW is the fastest growing university in the country,” he said.

He said, for instance, that this year, the university recorded the highest number of applications and admitted the highest number of students this year.

Rev. Prof. Afful-Broni said, the Kumasi Campus admitted 5,876 students out of the 7,310 who applied.

Congregations

The V-C said the congregation of the university suffered a jolt due to the expiration of the term of office of the University Council.

“Thankfully, after two months or so of diligent search by the government, a new council, under the chairmanship of Prof. Obeng Mireku, has been constituted and duly sworn in,” he said, and was hopeful that the new council would steer the university to a greater oasis of peace and prosperity.

Following the constitution of the new council, he said, the congregation had been rescheduled for the latter part of the month on all the campuses of the university.

New programmes

He announced that the COLTEK had introduced five new programmes, starting this academic year and named them as: MPhil in Catering and Hospitality; MPhil, Fashion Design and Textiles; MPhil, Mechanical Technology; MPhil, Electricals and Electronics, and MPhil, Automotive Engineering.

Rev. Prof. Afful-Broni said the college was in the process of introducing more market-driven programmes to meet the needs of industries and commerce.

Mampong Campus

At the university’s College of Agriculture (CAGRI) at the Asante Mampong where Rev Prof Afful-Broni performed a similar matriculation exercise later in the day, Emmanuel Baah reports that out of the 2,241 applications received, 1,732 were admitted, of which 1,102 are males and 643 females.

The V-C advised the students not to allow themselves to be used for any satanic purposes and to be mindful of their associations.

New appointment

He hinted that the Governing Council and the management of the university had appointed Prof. Ruby Hanson as the new acting Pro-Vice Chancellor, to replace Prof.

James Kwame Kagya-Agyemang, who had acted in the capacity for one-and-a-half years.
