He said it was important that electoral materials were properly documented and kept safely so that in the event of a misunderstanding in connection with the exercise, the commission would be in a position to provide evidence about the exercise.

According to him, proper documentation and storage of electoral materials would save the country from chaos in this year’s elections.

Workshop

Alhaji Sulley was speaking to district electoral officers and district directors of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale, on the processes involved in the upcoming voter exhibition and verification exercise slated for July 18 to August 7, this year.

He said the recent law suit against the commission to produce the list of voters who registered with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) identification cards was a clear case to prove whether the commission had been keeping proper data of electoral materials or not.

“Many people thought we were not having documents on people who registered with the NHIS cards,” he stated.

According to him, the EC was saved from disgrace and embarrassment at the Supreme Court when it was asked to produce the list of voters who registered with NHIS cards because the commission had proper data on all voters.

Purpose

Touching on the workshop, Alhaji Sulley said the purpose of the workshop was to build the capacities of the district electoral officers and district directors of NCCE on the voter exhibition exercise.

He added that the workshop would enable both the staffs of EC and NCCE to have deeper understanding of the voter exhibition and verification exercise so that they in turn would educate the electorates.

He also mentioned that the workshop would cement the good relationship between the EC and the NCCE as close allies.

The workshop, which would be carried out across the country, was sponsored by the European Union (EU).
