The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has urged the Ghanaian Community in Angola to participate in the upcoming Diaspora Summit in December this year.
He said the summit, scheduled to take place on December 19 and 20, must be embraced by all members in the diaspora, whom he described as a central part of the government’s reset agenda.
The minister was speaking at a dinner organised by Ghana’s Embassy in Luanda, Angola, in honour of the Vice-President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, last Tuesday night.
He described the December event as a homecoming for all members in the diaspora and investors, saying they could tap into the investment opportunities the summit would offer.
“It’s a grand homecoming, and as the Chief Ambassador marketing the diaspora summit, I invite you to come back home for Christmas and let us reunite.
“At the last Cabinet meeting, we discussed a diaspora bond, so that all of you who want to invest can have a defined medium of investment.
“When you come for the diaspora summit, President John Dramani Mahama will be holding that bond so that you know how to invest to guarantee security of your investment,” Mr Ablakwa added.
Background
The Diaspora Summit 2025 is a high-level meeting of global Ghanaian and Pan-African diaspora communities, policymakers, private sector actors and development stakeholders.
The summit is designed to institutionalise diaspora engagement as a strategic pillar of national development, positioning the diaspora not merely as contributors of remittances but as active partners in governance, investment, innovation and cultural promotion.
It will be held on the theme: “Resetting Ghana – The diaspora as the 17th region”.
Ghana Card
The minister also assured them that his outfit would ensure they obtain their Ghana Card without any hindrance.
This was in response to a plea made by the community following challenges they faced trying to acquire the national identification card in their host country.
“I want to assure the leadership of the community that I have listened to all the matters that you have raised, and as soon as I go to the ministry, I am going to take immediate action.
“The last time we were in Nigeria, the community made similar requests, and we promptly addressed all those matters,” he said, adding that the President Mahama-led administration is a promise-fulfilling government.”
Commendation
Mr Ablakwa commended them for their track record of good behaviour, as none of them had been engaged or arrested for any illegality.
“The Ghanaian community here is not noted for any untoward conduct or breaking the law.
We have not heard that there are Ghanaian prisoners who are being contained because they have fallen foul of the law.
“All we have heard are good reports that you are maintaining a good image of Ghana, and you are following in the traditions of our country.
We want to thank you very much for that, and we want to encourage you to continue with the impressive track record,” he said.
