The Concerned Farmers Association of Ghana (CFA-Ghana) has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his policy interventions to revitalise the agriculture sector of the country.
A statement signed and issued by the President of the association, Nana Oboadie Boateng Bonsu II, to mark this year’s Farmers Day, urged the President to prioritise the critical issues affecting farmers, especially, the devastating impact of galamsey (illegal mining) on farmlands and cocoa production, the backbone of the country’s economy.
They also expressed their disappointment and frustration over the persistent politicisation of the Farmers’ Day celebrations, saying after 41 years, the occasion has failed to translate into meaningful benefits for farmers, with politics overshadowing the sector’s critical needs.
“We urge the government to stop politicising Farmers’ Day and invest in infrastructure that empowers farmers,” it said, adding that “The absence of essential infrastructure — irrigation systems, functional dams, and adequate storage facilities ‚remains a stark reality,”
The association demanded that the government used this year’s Farmers’ Day to announce a single-digit interest rate for farmers, a move that could transform the agricultural sector and support the value chain.
