Dealing with malfeasance not limited to past govt officials - Asiedu Nketiah reminds NDC appointees

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has stated that the fight against malfeasance is not limited to political opponents but to government appointees as well.

He explained that the reset agenda was not only about punishing political opponents found culpable of corruption but also appointees of the current government who would engage in corrupt deals.

“Even as we are dealing with the excesses of the previous administration, we must send a strong signal to our own party functionaries and our own appointees that whatever will be happening to the appointees of the previous government will very soon be happening to our own appointees who engage in the same misconduct,” he said.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah was speaking at the 46th anniversary national durbar held at Laasi Park at Odumase-Krobo in the Lower Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region.

The June 4 uprising, which was led by then Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, the Founder of the NDC, was a significant event in Ghana’s political history, driven by calls for probity, accountability and justice against corruption and mismanagement by the ruling elite.

This year’s event was on the theme: “Resetting Ghana; Reflecting on June 4”.

Indiscriminate

Mr Asiedu Nketiah explained that it was when such decisive indiscriminate actions were taken that “Ghanaians will take us seriously that we are indeed resetting a nation to the path of truth, accountability and on to the path of progress.”

He said the ongoing investigations, arrests and prosecution of past government officials were not about revenge, but about holding people accountable for their own deeds.

“It is about resetting the country, it is about holding people accountable for a mandate that the population has given them.

It is about holding people to account for the looting of our state resources and we shouldn’t allow political parties to be the refuge for criminals,” he said.

Renaming  headquarters

Mr Asiedu Nketiah announced a proposal by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NDC to declare the month of June as NDC month to celebrate its anniversaries and other major activities.

He also said a proposal had been tabled to rename the NDC Headquarters after the late Founder, Jerry John Rawlings.

Turn-around

The National Chairman of United Cadres Front (UCF), Shine Gavey,  stated that the June 4 Uprising was justified as it provided a turn-around from bad governance of reckless management of state resources that permeated society to governance that was people centred.
