EC opens nominations for 2024 polls

The Electoral Commission (EC) will from September 9 to September 13, this year receive nominations for the elections of President and Members of Parliament (MPs).

This is pursuant to Regulations 6, 7 and 8 of the Public Elections Regulations, 2020 (C.I. 127). The EC maintained the 2020 elections filing fees for presidential candidates at GH¢100,000 and GH¢10,000 for parliamentary candidates.

A statement issued in Accra yesterday and signed by the Deputy Chairman in-charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, said interested candidates were required to download the nomination forms from the EC’s website at https://ec.gov.gh/forms from today.

However, it said, all prospective candidates who wished to contest the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections as independent candidates should contact the commission for a passcode.

“This will enable the aspirants to download the Presidential and Parliamentary Nomination Forms posted on the website of the commission,” it said.

Presidential candidates

The statement explained that a candidate for election as President shall be nominated on the official nomination forms of the commission”. The completed presidential nomination forms for each candidate for president “shall be signed by the candidate and not less than two persons who were registered voters of each district assembly”, it said.

The statement added that the completed forms should designate the person to serve as Vice-President. It said the nomination forms shall be in quadruplicate and shall be delivered personally by the presidential candidate or any two of the registered voters who signed the nomination forms for the candidate.

“In addition to the completed nomination forms, the candidate shall submit four copies of a recent post-card (bust sized) photograph against a red background showing the full face and ears of the candidate to the Returning Officer,” it added.

The Chairperson of the EC serves as the Returning Officer for the presidential election.

Submission

The statement said the completed presidential nomination forms must be delivered at the Head Office of the EC between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. as well as between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. each day.

It said candidates vying for the position of president would be required to make a payment of GH¢100,000 at the time of submitting their nomination forms. It said female presidential candidates and persons with disability were required to pay GH¢75,000.

It said payment shall be by banker's draft and addressed to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission. 

Parliamentary

Again, completed parliamentary nomination forms shall be delivered in quadruplicate by the candidate personally or on his/her behalf by either the proposer or seconder of his/her nomination to the Returning Officer of the constituency for which the candidate seeks election, it said.

With regard to the parliamentary elections, the statement said the completed parliamentary nomination forms “shall be witnessed by the signature or mark of two registered voters as proposer and seconder, and supported by 18 other registered voters in the constituency who signed the nomination forms for the candidate.

It said the nomination forms shall be endorsed by the candidate. In addition to the completed nomination forms, the candidate shall submit four copies of a recent post-card (bust sized) photograph against a red background, showing his/her full.

Fees

It said candidates vying for the position of MP would be required to make a payment of GH¢10,000 to the Returning Officer of the constituency at the time of submitting their nomination forms.

“Payment shall be by banker’s draft and addressed to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission. Female candidates and persons with disability are required to pay GH¢7,500,” it added.

The statement urged that all enquiries relating to the presidential election should be addressed to the Chairperson of the EC and those for the parliamentary election should be sent to the Returning Officers of the Constituencies where the candidates seek election.
