Election 2024: Ghana beacon of democracy — NAPRM-GC
The National African Peer Review Mechanism Governing Council (NAPRM-GC) has stated that the successful conduct of this year’s election has underscored Ghana’s well-deserved status as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
“The peaceful and orderly nature of the election reflects the nation’s steadfast dedication to democratic ideals and the rule of law,” it said.
In a statement issued in Accra, it said Ghanaians had once again demonstrated their resolve to shape their future through the power of the ballot.
“The 2024 general election marks another significant milestone in Ghana’s democratic journey, reaffirming its reputation as a leader in electoral integrity and democratic governance on the African continent,” it said.
Exemplary conduct
It congratulated the government and Ghanaians on the exemplary conduct exhibited during the December 7, 2024, general election.
The NAPRM-GC also congratulated the President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, on his victory and commended the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for presiding over yet another peaceful election.
It also commended the Vice-President and flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for his display of statesmanship.
“We applaud both leaders for their mutual respect of the declared election results and their prompt collaboration during the transition process, further enhancing the beauty of Ghana’s democratic legacy,” it said.
Electoral institutions
The statement lauded the dedication and professionalism of Ghana’s electoral institutions, including civil society organisations and security agencies, whose pivotal roles ensured a credible, inclusive and transparent electoral process.
This achievement, it explained, highlighted the resilience and strength of Ghanaian institutions in upholding democratic principles.
The statement said as the nation embarked on the next chapter of its governance journey, the government, political actors and citizens should reaffirm their unwavering commitment to democratic ideals emphasising that a peaceful transfer of power remained a cornerstone of democracy, symbolising the maturity of a nation that prioritised collective progress over partisan interests.
Condemn
It nevertheless, condemned the actions of certain unscrupulous individuals in attempting to undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
“We call for an immediate end to all forms of post-election violence. We encourage all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue and respect the will of the Ghanaian electorate.
Through this shared dedication to unity and purpose, Ghana can continue to strengthen its leadership role in advancing democracy and good governance across Africa,” it said.
