GCPP mourns victims of helicopter crash

The Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) has expressed shock and sorrow over the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians, describing the victims as heroes who dedicated their lives to serving the nation.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Dr Lartey described the incident as a catastrophe. He said the deceased were strong people in the ruling government who were making impact and roadways for the country to be sustainable, safe and protected.

He extended its heartfelt condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the Ghana Armed Forces, the National Democratic Congress and the bereaved families. "We pray God comforts us all, especially the immediate families," the statement read.

Tribute

Dr Lartey paid tribute to the victims, saying they were gallant men full of life and dedicated to serving the nation.

"They are heroes and this day should never be forgotten in our history," he stressed.

National mourning

“The GCPP joins other political parties in the country, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Convention People's Party (CPP), All People's Congress (APC) and People's National Party (PNP), in mourning the loss of the lives. President John Dramani Mahama has declared three days of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast.

Background

The helicopter crash occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, while the victims were travelling to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region for a national event to launch a government initiative against illegal mining.

The deceased included senior government officials, such as Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Minister of Environment, Science and Technology Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

The rest the acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna; Vice Chair of the NDC, Samuel Sarpong; a former parliamentary candidate, Samuel Aboagye; Squadron Leader Peter Anala; Flying Officer Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo. 

Burial

Dr Murtala Mohammed and the Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Murinu Limuna, were laid to rest at the Military Cemetery at Burma Camp in Accra on Sunday, August 10, 2025, according to Islamic customs.

An inter-denominational state funeral would be held for the eight heroes at the Black Star Square on Friday, August 15, this year.
