Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition calls for action against graft
The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) has renewed its call for collective responsibility to tackle the corruption menace in all its facets.
It noted the devastating impact of corruption on the country's development.
"Corruption continues to undermine our development, deepen inequality and erode public trust in institutions," it said.
Africa Union
The GACC made the call in a statement signed and issued by its Executive Secretary, Beauty Emefa Narteh, to mark this year's African Union Anti-Corruption Day (AUACD) observed every July 11.
The day was established to promote the implementation of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption.
It serves as a platform to raise awareness, assess progress and renew the continent’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
Ghana's experience
"In Ghana, the cost is undeniable. The 2023 Auditor-General's Report revealed that the country lost over GH¢S11 billion to financial irregularities, resources that could have transformed education, healthcare and job opportunities for its citizens," the statement said.
It emphasised that young people were disproportionately affected by corruption, which disrupts access to quality education, reduces job prospects and undermines trust in public systems.
However, the coalition said young people have the power to change the narrative.
Youth Empowerment
"We recognise that empowering the youth to stand against corruption is a critical step toward building a fairer, more inclusive country where development benefits all, not just a few," it said.
To this end, the GACC said it was committed to implementing a nationwide youth-targeted anti-corruption campaign, which will reach 40 districts across the 16 regions in the country.
The campaign, it said, seeks to raise awareness about corruption, promote civic engagement and encourage whistleblowing.
The GACC called on all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, community leaders and public agencies, to support and protect young people as they take a stand against corruption.
"Let us support and protect them as they take a stand for transparency and justice," it said.
