Keep your pledge to serve constituents - Speaker urges Ayawaso East MP
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has urged the newly elected Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, to uphold his pledge to serve his constituents.
"You voluntarily offered yourself to serve the good people of the Ayawaso East Constituency. In your campaign, you stated that you want to serve them as a Member of Parliament," he told Baba Jamal.
Mr Bagbin was speaking shortly after swearing in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Ayawaso East in Parliament today.
He said he was going to hold the MP accountable to the constituents of Ayawaso East.
"You are going to serve Ghana and not as a High Commissioner; I am going to hold you as my son. I will hold you accountable to the good people of the Ayawaso East Constituency," Mr Bagbin stated.
Oath
The Speaker administered the oath of office and the oath of allegiance to Alhaji Ahmed.
Alhaji Ahmed, on March 3, 2026, won the by-election in the constituency following the passing of the former MP, Alhaji Mahama Toure Naser.
Focus
Mr Bagbin urged the new lawmaker to remain focused on serving his constituents and the nation.
“During your campaign, you promised the people of Ayawaso East that you wanted to serve them as a Member of Parliament and by doing so, serve Ghana,” the Speaker said.
“Serving them, you must. So, I will focus on you on this floor to see how you perform in serving them,” he added.
Alhaji Ahmed once served as MP for Akwatia in the Eastern Region from 2009 to 2013.
Baba Jamal’s re-entry into Parliament follows a by-election conducted in the Ayawaso East Constituency following the demise of the former MP.
He resigned his position as Ghana's High Commissioner to Nigeria to contest the NDC's primary, which he won despite controversy over vote-buying.
