NDC slates December 19 for national executive election; Govt appointees seeking position to resign 6 months prior

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has slated December 19 for its national executive elections as it outlined a comprehensive roadmap for the party’s reorganisation.

The party, as part of measures to effectively run its activities, has charged government appointees intending to contest for positions in the party to resign at least six clear months ahead of the election.

The roadmap for the NDC’s internal elections was announced by the General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, at the party headquarters in Accra yesterday.

“Pursuant to Article 54 of the party's Constitution, the National Executive Committee (NEC) has approved the following general provisions under Section (H) of the guidelines for the election.

“Any person seeking to contest for a party position who currently holds an office to which he or she was appointed by the President or government must resign from that office at least six (6) clear months before filing nomination forms.

“The affected offices under paragraph (1) include, but are not limited to: Ministers and Deputy Ministers, Chief Executive Officers, Managing Directors, their Deputies, or analogous officers, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives,” he said.

Eligibility

The restrictions, however, exempted Chairpersons or members of Boards, or persons in analogous positions.

The restrictions also mean all those intending to contest at the national level are to resign by June this year to be eligible to contest in the election, while those intending to contest at the regional level are expected to resign by May this year, as the regional elections are slated for November 14-15.

Constituency-level elections would be held on Saturday, October 24-25, which implies that those contesting at the constituency level are expected to resign by April this year, while the branch-level elections would be held on May 30 this year.

Discipline

The General Secretary of the party urged all party officials to apply themselves diligently, act transparently and uphold the values of the party as the reorganisation process demands discipline, integrity, fairness and collective responsibility.

He charged members to remember that the objective of the process was not merely to elect officers, but to strengthen the party, deepen internal democracy, consolidate unity and position the NDC as a formidable political force capable of delivering responsible and people-centred governance.

“If we get the party right, we get the government right. If we weaken the party, we weaken the government.

The choice before us is clear.

The NDC approaches this exercise with utmost seriousness and resolve.

“We are committed to a credible, orderly and inclusive reorganisation that reflects the will of our members and strengthens our democratic credentials,” he stated.

Mr Kwetey urged all members of the NDC to fully cooperate with the party structures and processes to collectively build a stronger, more vibrant and more resilient party.
