NDC targets 94% votes in Volta Region

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has launched its Volta regional campaign for the 2024 election, with former President John Mahama setting a target of securing 94 per cent of votes in the region.

Addressing supporters in Juapong, a stronghold of the NDC, Mr Mahama emphasised the need for the party to regain its dominance in the region, which he attributed to the NDC's development efforts.

“We got 84 per cent in the last election. Although 84 is high, it is a decline of what we used to get during the era of John Rawlings,” the former president said.

Money politics

Mr Mahama noted that the region had earned the name "World Bank" due to its consistent support for the party and encouraged party faithful to remain loyal to the party as the NDC was the only party that championed the developmental agenda of the region.

He cited some of the projects in the region that were executed by the NDC government, including the Ho Airport, the University of Health and Allied Sciences, roads and rural electrification.

Mr Mahama criticised the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for attempting to make inroads into the region through propaganda and "money politics."

He urged supporters to reject such tactics, saying, "When they bring you the money, collect it and chop it, but when you go to vote, vote according to your truth."

“They claim the NDC has done nothing in the region after many years of voting for the party but that’s not true because almost all the development in the region was the handiwork of the NDC,” he said.

Representation

Mr Mahama emphasised the importance of securing a majority of seats in parliament to "fix the mess" caused by the NPP government, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. He urged supporters to work towards achieving above 90 per cent votes for the NDC in the Volta Region.

The former president also highlighted the need for women empowerment, saying: “Our women have occupied every position in the country and come January 7 next year we will have a woman vice-president and that gives me hope that all my sisters here will aspire for higher offices”.

He also highlighted the party’s commitment to women empowerment and the establishment of the Women Development Bank to provide patient capital to support women led businesses.

The former president praised the party's Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, for his advocacy and development efforts in his constituency.

Other activities

Former President Mahama's busy day in the region continued with a meeting with the Asogli chiefs in Ho Central. This encounter sought to tap into their wisdom, secure their blessings, and gain valuable insights on the region's development trajectory.

Next, Mr Mahama engaged with the community in Kpetoe, Agotime Ziope, where he outlined his comprehensive plans for the area's development, addressed pressing concerns, and solicited feedback from residents.

The day's activities culminated in a Youth Townhall Meeting at the Ho Technical University. Here, Mr Mahama inspired, empowered and engaged with young people, urging them to take an active role in shaping their future and contributing to the region's growth.
