NPP presidential primary: Committee updates former Presidents Nana Akufo-Addo, Kufuor
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee (PEC) to ensure transparency in the conduct of the party’s presidential election.
Not only that, he said, the PEC must also ensure a free, fair and credible electoral process and outcome.
He made the call when members of the committee called on him to brief him on the committee's activities in the execution of the party's presidential primary scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Members of the committee also paid a courtesy call on former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on a similar mission.
Mr Kufuor further called on the committee to ensure that results were simultaneously and uniformly transmitted to collation centres to avoid manipulations.
Nana Akufo-Addo
Former President Akufo-Addo, during the call on him, commended the PEC for what he described as an impressive and transparent execution of its mandate ahead of the party’s upcoming election.
Nana Akufo-Addo said the work carried out by the committee stood out for its clarity, openness and strict adherence to democratic principles.
“The committee’s work, thus far, has been nothing short of impressive,” the former President said, stressing that key milestones had been achieved under a firm commitment to zero tolerance for opacity.
That approach, he said, had not only ensured transparency but had also “guarded religiously the sanctity of the process.”
PEC
The Chairman of the PEC, Joseph Osei-Owusu, a former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, reaffirmed the committee's readiness to ensure a free, fair and transparent electoral process.
He said his committee would continue to discharge its duties in a very transparent manner to ensure a credible and successful election as it continued to engage all stakeholders.
Aspirants
Five flag bearer hopefuls of the party are vying to lead the party into the 2028 general election.
They are Ken Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
The election would take place in 277 voting centres across the 276 constituencies and the party’s national headquarters, with 214,812 delegates voting to elect the party’s flag bearer.
The outstanding activities include a meeting with flag bearer aspirants, the EC and the police on January 13, 2026 and the signing of a Peace Pact on January 22, 2026.
