Grassroots gambit: Bryan Acheampong ends nationwide tour ahead of party primary

Dr. Bryan Acheampong has formally concluded a sweeping national tour, having engaged with grassroots delegates across all 276 constituencies in Ghana, his campaign office announced on Friday.

The tour, described in a press release as "widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive grassroots engagements in the party’s history," was framed as a direct outreach to the core base of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Dr. Acheampong emphasised that the "strength of the NPP lies in its grassroots" and pledged "to stand firmly with them and ensure that their voices remain central to the party’s renewal and victory in 2028."

A notable claim from the campaign is that Dr. Acheampong "has distinguished himself as the only candidate to tour the Bawku zone, a region often considered one of the most challenging terrains in Ghanaian politics." This effort was presented as evidence of a commitment to inclusive engagement.

Speaking at the close of the tour, Dr. Acheampong stated, “This journey has shown me once again that our party’s heartbeat is at the grassroots. I am grateful for the warmth, the trust, and the faith shown to me across the country. Together, we will build a stronger NPP and a stronger Ghana.”

The campaign concluded that the nationwide effort "has not only consolidated his reach but also positioned him as a unifier with real grassroots momentum."

Background and context

Dr. Bryan Acheampong is one of five prominent figures contesting to become the NPP's presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections. The other aspirants are Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, and former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.

The NPP is scheduled to hold its presidential primary on Saturday, January 31, 2026, where an electoral college of party delegates will select the flagbearer. The conclusion of Dr. Acheampong's tour is seen as a strategic move to solidify his support base among these delegates just weeks before the crucial internal election.
