Omane Boamah was fearless, fighter — NDC
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described the late Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, as a brilliant strategist and utterly fearless.
It said Dr Omane Boamah was a fighter for democracy, who brought unmatched dynamism to the organisation of campaigns, training of polling agents and election monitoring.
“His rare blend of intellect, empathy and resilience made him a treasure to our party and nation,” it said.
Tribute
In a tribute read on behalf of the NDC at the state funeral of the eight Ghanaians who perished in the helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, the General Secretary of the party, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, stated that as Director of Elections, Dr Omane Boamah mobilised resources, prepared the party’s grassroots with military precision and oversaw the work of the Electoral Commission with the vigilance of an eagle.

He said Dr Omane Boamah was a perfectionist whose high standards of excellence would not only inspire generations but also make his replacement nearly impossible.
“He modernised Ghana’s communication infrastructure, strengthened national institutions, guided the NDC’s electoral strategy and championed public health and environmental protection,” the party stated.
Multi-task
Mr Kwetey said Dr Omane Boamah’s professional journey was a rare blend of medicine, governance and strategic political leadership.
He said in politics, Dr Omane Boamah’s contributions to the NDC and Ghana were monumental. Having served as Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology (2009–2012) under late President J. E. A. Mills, he went on to serve as Minister for Communications/Spokesperson for the President (2013–2017) when President John Dramani Mahama was elected in 2012.
Mr Kwetey said Dr Omane Boamah spearheaded transformative ICT projects, the Eastern Corridor Fibre Optic Project, the Accra Digital Centre, the National Data Centre and the 4G LTE network rollout for security agencies.
“Within the NDC, his most recent and perhaps most impactful role was as Director of Elections and IT from August 2023 until his passing,” he said.
He recalled that going into the crucial 2024 election, Dr Omane Boamah brought unmatched strategic insight, technological expertise and a perfectionist’s discipline, ensuring the party’s preparedness at every level.
“His analytical mind, meticulous planning and incorruptible loyalty made him indispensable to our electoral machinery,” he said.
Touching lives
Mr Kwetey stated that the late Defence Minister believed true success was about touching lives, and he demonstrated integrity, humility and courage at home and in public service.
He described Dr Omane Boamah as a philanthropist, recalling that just days before his death, he paid GH¢80,000 for life-changing surgery for nine-year-old Setor, a physically challenged boy who had captured national attention.
