Halt Extraordinary Delegates’ Conference — Two NPP members urge High Court

Two members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have filed a motion at the High Court seeking to halt the party’s Extraordinary Delegates’ Conference scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2025.

In the application, which has been set for hearing next Thursday, July 24, 2025, the plaintiffs; Shamsudeen Iddrisu and Boateng Kwadwo, contend that the party has violated its constitution by failing to organise constituency and regional delegates’ conferences, which they argue are mandatory prerequisites for convening a National Delegates’ Conference.

They further argue that the party’s National Council does not have the authority to waive the constitutional requirements for holding constituency and regional annual delegates’ conferences ahead of the national one.

According to the plaintiffs, only the National Annual Delegates’ Conference, the party’s supreme governing body, has the exclusive authority to amend or waive such constitutional provisions.

They claim to have petitioned the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) over what they describe as “unlawful” actions, but say the NEC failed to respond to their concerns.

“The conduct of the party will deprive members at the constituency and regional levels of the opportunity to consider the proposed amendments ahead of the scheduled date for the conference and also the opportunity to make meaningful contributions at the conference,” the plaintiffs stated.

They added that the NPP would not suffer any hardship or inconvenience if the court granted the application, since the party would still have the opportunity to reconvene the conference once it complies with its constitutional requirements.

The plaintiffs are therefore praying the court to issue an interlocutory injunction restraining the NPP from holding the Extraordinary Delegates’ Conference until all procedural and constitutional matters have been addressed.
