House eulogises Aliu

Parliament yesterday eulogised the late former Vice-President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, to mark the first anniversary of his demise and called for measures to immortalise him for future generations to learn from the principles that he stood for.

For more than one-and-a-half hours, Members of Parliament (MPs) from both sides of the House extolled the qualities of the late Veep, particularly his efforts at instilling discipline in the Ghanaian society.

In the end, what ran through the contributions to a statement made by the MP for Akuapem South, Mr Osei Bonsu Amoah, was that a national monument, particularly the Tamale Sports Stadium, be named after him.

Statement

In his statement, Mr Amoah said throughout his 66 years of existence,  Alhaji Mahama came across as a diligent, hard-working, affable, disciplined and generous gentleman.

He said as a Vice-President,  Alhaji Mahama worked hard and brought dignity to the office, adding that he was a practical person interested in addressing challenges and providing the platform for finding solutions to the country's development problems.

Contributions

Contributing to the statement, the MP for Wa West, Mr Joseph Yieleh Chireh, said Alhaji Mahama looked beyond his party and associated himself with people from the other side of the political divide.

For the MP for Yendi, Alhaji Mohammed Habibu Tijani, Vice-President, Alhaji Mahama, was a father who helped many students to attain higher academic laurels.

The MP for Shai Osudoku, Mr David Tetteh-Assumeng, called on Ghanaians to live by the attributes and rich legacy left behind by Alhaji Mahama, stressing that Ghanaians should be disciplined and let sanitation in their localities be their concern.

The MP for Sekondi, Papa Owusu-Ankomah, said Vice-President Alui Mahama championed a cause that endeared him to all Ghanaians and added that the greatest monument that Ghanaians could build for him was to be disciplined.

The MP for Okere, Mr Dan Botwe, advised politicians to not allow their supporters to hold them to ransom by pushing them to not  associate themselves with people who were not in their parties.

A Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations and MP for Nanton, Mr Ibrahim Murtala, advised young people engaged in national politics to learn from the humility exhibited by Alhaji Mahama.

The Deputy Minority Leader, Mr Dominic Nitiwul, said, "I will celebrate this man's life because he lived a life worthy of emulation. He has left a mark in Yendi, Tamale, Accra and the country as a whole," he said.

The Deputy Majority Leader, Mr Alfred Agbesi, said even though Alhaji Mahama was a university graduate, he took to commercial farming and urged unemployed university graduates to emulate his example to create employment for themselves.
