Announcing formally this intention in a telephone conversation with the Daily Graphic on Saturday, the incumbent chairman stated, “I will be seeking re-election as National Chairman of the NPP. I believe we did well in 2012 but we need to do better in 2016, and to do that we need to build on the experience and knowledge we have gained.”

Already, three other key contestants have declared their intention to contest and win the chairmanship position when it is declared vacant. Mr Stephen Ntim announced his intention at a press briefing in Accra recently in which he took the opportunity to launch his website page for his campaign. Mr Paul Afoko (from the Northern Region), a stalwart of the party, and Mr Fred Oware, incumbent Vice Chairman of the party, have also declared their intentions on various media platforms throughout the country. Indeed, Mr Afoko intends to officially launch his national campaign either in the Upper East  Region where he comes from or the Greater Accra Region, the capital of the country.

According to Mr Obetsebi Lamptey, he was offering himself (with experience and learnt lessons of especially the last election) for re-election and for Victory 2016.

In a statement issued yesterday, he extended his New Year greetings to members of the NPP and the Ghanaian populace.

He declared, ‘As we enter 2014, I wish to greet all members and supporters of the New Patriotic Party.”

He also congratulated NPP members for the mature way they handled the party’s internal competition.

In the view of the NPP chairman, “competition will always stir passion, so it is no surprise that some places reached a boiling point.”

He, however, called on members of the party to look at their achievements, saying: “We have elected almost 130,000 polling station executives across the country. We have also successfully elected executives for over 90 per cent of the 275 constituencies. This would be a high pass mark in any examination. So I say Ayekoo.”

He said that once more the NPP had demonstrated that internal democracy worked well.

“This follows the great successes we had with our Presidential and Parliamentary primaries of 2010 and 2011. We should take encouragement from what we do well, to do even better,” he charged.

He concluded by saying that: “Now that almost all constituency executives are in place, we have our electoral college for the regional and national executives elections. So this is the time for me to announce my intention to contest the chairmanship of the NPP.”
