Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

Join the NPP's winning train - Bawumia implores Ghanaians

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who was Thursday re-nominated as a presidential running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared his party's readiness to win the 2016 elections.

He therefore called on Ghanaians to  jump on board “the winning train”, since, according to him, the John Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration had woefully failed Ghanaians.

It will be disastrous, Dr Bawumia said, to reward the NDC with another term.

He said: “I call on all Ghanaians to come on board this train and let us build a nation we can all be proud of – a Ghana where we are all certain that our taxes and resources will eventually find their way back to us in the form of reliable water, electricity and sanitation, quality and affordable education and healthcare, jobs… and not find their way into the pockets of those managing the resources.”

Dr Bawumia’s comments follow his endorsement Thursday as running mate of the NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo.

Speaking at the NPP Headquarters in Accra, Akufo-Addo lauded Bawumia’s credentials as a "top notch" economist and a patriotic member of the party.

Akufo-Addo said: "I have been very lucky to have Mahamudu by my side since 2008. His credentials as top notch economist were always known to all and have been reinforced by his analytical work and performance in this sector in the past five years earning him the sobriquet of Dr Prophet.

"It has been a joy to see him blossom as a consummate politician as well and win the affection of Ghanaians, and we all know how the nation took to his performance in the witness box in the Supreme Court during the historic election petition. Dr. Pinksheet is yet another of his names.

“The economy was always going to be the main battleground for the 2016 elections but the dire situation the country has been plunged into by the incompetence of the John Dramani Mahama administration makes the presence of Dr Bawumia on the NPP presidential ticket even more appropriate,” Nana Addo told the press after unveiling Bawumia to the press.

“Luckily there is real chemistry between the two of us as well and I look forward to us leading the team that will ensure an NPP victory in 2016. I am confident that he will make an outstanding Vice President of the Republic and good manager of the economy who will help me reverse the decline of the economy, if Almighty God and the Ghanaian people favour us with the opportunity of service come January 2017.”

For his part, Dr Bawumia expressed his gratitude to Nana Addo and the leadership of the NPP for the confidence reposed in him.

This marks the third consecutive time that Akufo-Addo has selected Bawumia as his running mate.

On the first two occasions – 2008 and 2012 – the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia partnership failed to win the Presidential Election.

But Akufo-Addo and Bawumia will hope to be third time lucky as they seek to wrestle power from President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2016.
