Let’s create culture of insisting on rights — NCCE

Ghanaians must initiate activities that will create a culture of insisting on individual rights in the country, the Municipal Director of the Ga Central National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr Sulemana Bayensi, has stated.

He said that had become imperative because such rights would not be conceded to anybody on a silver platter.

He made the remarks at a forum on strategies to enhance the participation of women and people living with disability  in decision-making at the local level at Sowutuom in Accra.

The programme was supported by the European Union and the NCCE.

The District Electoral Officer,  Mr George Sissuah, disclosed that out of the 35 contestants for the District Assembly Elections in the Anyaa Sowutuom Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, 34 were males.

He also said 82 out of the 108 candidates contesting  the Unit Committee elections were men and added that there was low participation of women in the district level election in the constituency.

The elections are scheduled for March 3, 2015.

Mr Joana Nkansah, a member of the Greater Accra Regional Office of the NCCE monitoring team, took participants through communication skills to enable the women contesting the district assembly election to articulate the needs, concerns and aspirations of women and children better.

The Presiding Member of the Ga Central Municipal Assembly and chairman for the occasion, Mr Sheriff Fatimah, said assembly members were not paid salaries or given contracts and so contestants should not consider what they would get through their positions but rather think of how to selflessly serve the people to develop their communities.
