He said although it was the responsibility of the assembly to lead the development agenda of the metropolis, lack of support and cooperation from the residents and other stakeholders would make it extremely difficult for it to achieve its development goals.

Call for change

Speaking at the second edition of the “meet the people” series at the Ahinsan Community Centre in the Asokwa Sub-Metro in Kumasi, the mayor called for a change in attitude by the people, since that was key in attaining any development agenda.

“There is the need for a change of attitude towards congestion, traffic flow and control, as well as building without permit, among other issues which need special attention by all,” he said.

Meet the People

The “meet the people” series is a regular meeting of the mayor with residents in the various sub-metros in the city to listen to their views and challenges which would help the assembly in its planning for the development of the metropolis.

Security, sanitation and development of road networks were among the major issues raised by the various speakers who called on the assembly to be strong and ensure that they enforced the laws and by-laws of the assembly to the letter.

Political inclinations

“There is the need for all to put aside their political inclinations when it comes to issues relating to development which affects everybody,” the mayor noted.

He urged all residents to let the issue of development be their priority and shun any activity which stood the chance of suppressing the assembly’s development agenda of bettering the lives of the people in the city, irrespective of their political, religious and ethnic background.

Building Permit

The assembly has set March 31, 2014 as the deadline for all residents to settle their building permit arrears with the assembly, after which defaulters would be prosecuted and owners of one-storey buildings would be made to pay a penalty of GH¢500; GH¢1000 for two storeys, GH¢1500 for three, while those of commercial buildings pay GH¢2000 as penalty respectively.

Revenue Mobilisation

The Member of Parliament for Asokwa, Madam Patricia Appiagyei, in her address, commended the KMA for the forum, but called on the assembly to improve upon its revenue mobilisation effort, as well as monitoring how the revenue collected was managed.

She pledged to support the mayor in all his endeavours, and called for collaboration to ensure that they all contributed their quota towards the development of the metropolis.
