Media must cover committee meetings of Parliament - MP for Keta
Some of the committee meetings, he recalled, included the Communication, Employment and Social Welfare, Trade, Industry and Tourism, Subsidiary Legislation, and the Public Accounts among others.
In an interview, the MP for Keta said, a chunk of parliamentary work took place at the committee level which was usually not seen by the general public.
“I am a strong advocate for this committee meeting to be captured by the media,” he stated stressing that this would go a long way to deepen multi-party democracy in the country.
As a first time Member of Parliament, Mr Quarshiga pointed out that “clearly it’s been so far exciting”.
“I have had first time experience of how debates are conducted in the house and how different it is from the debates we normally engage in the public domain. This is because largely, there are rules governing parliamentary debates which are captured in the standing orders of parliament,” he stated.
On his personal contribution to strengthen democratic governance, Mr Quarshiga declared that he was hoping to contribute effectively to the development of Ghana’s democracy to leave an indelible footprint.
“I do not intend to merely pass through; I intend to leave a mark,” he told the Daily Graphic.
He was extremely grateful to the people of Keta for having confidence and electing him to represent them in the legislature of Ghana.
“Clearly, I am also aware of their great expectations; I am very confident that I will do what I can with God’s help not to disappoint them”, he stated.
Already, Mr Quarshiga said he was involved in efforts to harness the salt potentials of the area into a very viable industry that would create jobs for the people.
“I am also discussing with various development agencies and ministries the development deficits in the constituency and I am happy to say that I am getting very good response,” the MP for Keta stated.
He said one of his priority was to see to the completion of the Havedzi-Afiadenyegba and the Hatorgodo roads as well as the water challenges at Anyako and its environs.
“I am very determined to come up with innovative ways in consultation with the chiefs and opinion leaders as well as prominent sons and daughters of the area”, he assured.
