NALAG president bemoans pressure for favours

The president of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), Alhaji Mohammed Doku,  has expressed concern about the incessant pressure on metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs) for favours by some traditional rulers and party faithful.

He said such demands defeated the purpose of the decentralisation process as local authorities  were there to serve the interest of the people and not the parochial agenda of individuals or groups.

Alhaji Doku, who is also the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE)  for Asunafo North in the Brong Ahafo Region, therefore, called on Ghanaians, especially party supporters to desist from putting unwarranted pressure on MMDCEs.

The NALAG President said this in an interview with the Daily Graphic in Tamale after attending the funeral of the late Mr Iddi Manza, the DCE for Kumbungu  in the Northern Region, who passed on a few weeks ago at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after a protracted illness.

According to Alhaji Doku, MMDCEs would be judged by their performances in enhancing the living standard of the people and not by the pursuit of any individual agenda.

He noted that some MMDCEs, in recent times, had come under attacks and cited the DCE for Twifo Atti Mokwa in  the Central Region,  Mr Bossman Osei Hyeaman who was recently jailed for contempt, and Mr Gabriel Barima, the  DCE for Ahafo Ano South ("Tweaa DCE") as examples.
