Court clears NDC to go ahead with Bunkpurugu parliamentary primary

The Tamale High Court has upheld a decision by the National Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to disqualify one of the aspirants who filed his nomination to contest the party's parliamentary primary in the Bunkpurugu constituency of the Northern Region.

The court presided over by Mr Justice Charles Gyamfi  upheld the decision of the party when the injunction case brought before it by the disqualified aspirant,  Mr  Nanduri Berrick came up for hearing Wednesday.

The ruling by the court has now paved the way for the NDC to hold its parliamentary primary in the Bunkpurugu constituency to select a candidate to contest on the party's ticket for this year's general elections.

The plaintiff in the case, Mr Berrick who was disqualified by the party filed an injunction to prevent the party from going ahead with the primary. The injunction application was granted.

He had wanted the court to compel the party to allow him to contest but the court upheld the earlier decision of the party when the matter came up for hearing Wednesday morning.

The plantiff was disqualified together with two others.

In all, a total of eight people filed their nominations to contest the primary in November 2015 in the Bunkpurugu constituency but three of them including the plaintiff were disqualified.

Those who are eligible to contest the primariy which the party is yet to set a date are Anthony Gingong,  Bonchel Abdulai,  Japong Tahidu,  Kolan Azumah  and Dr Benson Kolan.

The Northern Regional Director of Elections of the NDC, Mr Computer Rashid Tanko told the Graphic Online in an interview that the regional secretariat of the party in consultation with national would set a date for the primary now that the court has ruled in the favour of the party.
