NDC Council of Elders meets today

The Council of Elders of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will today hold a meeting at the party headquarters in Accra to discuss some aspects of Prof. Kwesi Botchwey’s report.

The 13-member Kwesi Botchwey Committee was put together by the leadership of the NDC to investigate and establish the cause of the party’s defeat in the December 7, 2016 general election.

The committee’s report is also aimed at sourcing how to move the party forward, make recommendations for the restructuring and reorganisation of the party to position it not only for election 2020 but to attain victory in the 2020 December elections.

According to the National Organiser of the NDC, Mr Kofi Adams, the central agenda of the meeting is to discuss some aspects of the report.

It was, however, not known if former President Jerry John Rawlings, who is the Chairman of the Council of Elders, will be in attendance since the meeting may also discuss the raging internal wranglings among some leading members of the party.

Committee findings

The Kwesi Botchwey Committee has advised the party to put together a peace mission and take steps to restore the integrity of the party’s biometric register and the expanded Electoral College as part of its reorganisation process.

The 455-page report christened: “Listening to the Grass roots”, further recommended to the party to restore and strengthen the capacity and effectiveness of its organs at the branch level, since they were effective tools for unity and cohesion within the party.

Prof. Botchwey, in presenting the report to the party in Accra recently, said the committee also recommended to the party to improve on the collation of election results and take steps to reconnect with its social democratic values and beliefs.

The report further called for steps to be taken to strengthen research and intelligence in the party involving coordination in the larger body of the party’s intellectual capacity which had not been active in the last few years.
