NDC eyes 85 per cent votes in Volta Region

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) branch in the Volta Region is targeting an increase in its votes by 150,000 to enable it to achieve a one-million vote gap in the region in the 2016 general election.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic during a capacity-building programme for the NDC youth and women at the Agotime-Ziope constituency, the Regional Chairman of the party, Mr John Kwadwo Gyapong, stated that more people in the region would be mobilised to join the party.

He said once the party was able to mobilise more people, it would have the opportunity to register them in the limited registration exercise in 2016 prior to the elections.

According to him, it would not be a difficult task to increase their votes by that number looking at the development going on in the region under the NDC government, which includes the construction of the airport, the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and the Ho Market.

Gap between NDC and NPP
He explained that the total number of voters in the region was about 1.2million of which the NDC was able to basket 733,000 votes as against 111,000 votes of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the last elections.

He said the last election saw a 75 per cent voter turnout and ‘’we created a gap of 623,000 between our party and the NPP.’’

Mr Gyapong said the party was working towards increasing the turnout of their voters to 85 per cent or more to realise its agenda.

‘’Once we achieve the one million-vote gap, the NDC party would win the election,’’ he said optimistically.

Leaving no stone unturned for the victory of the NDC, Mr Gyapong stated that the party, from December this year, would start educating its members on how to vote to prevent the huge number of rejected ballots as it occurred in the 2012 elections.

‘’In the last election, 24,000 votes were rejected in the Volta Region and the statistics showed that all those votes were for the NDC,’’ he said.

He, however, indicated that the party in the region would have to be well-resourced to deliver on the strategies outlined.

Logistics
‘’Volta Region has to be given all the necessary attention, including logistics, to get the people behind us because we are going to win the election for the party’’, he stated.

Be focused
The National Organiser of the party, Mr Kofi Adams, told the party members not to be deceived by the comments by detractors that nothing good was happening under the current government.
