NPP has no tribal agenda— Akufo-Addo

There will never be any form of marginalisation of any ethnic group in Ghana under a New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, the 2016 presidential candidate of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, has declared.

According to him, contrary to the propaganda by political opponents of the NPP, there would never be any marginalisation of any ethnic group in Ghana under an Akufo Addo government, should Ghanaians give him the mandate in December 2016.

He gave an assurance that all Ghanaians, regardless of where they hailed from, would have a pride of place in Ghana as development and the improvement of living standards for all would be the main focus of his government.

A delegation from the Binduri Constituency, on Monday, June 29, 2015, visited Nana Akufo-Addo. It was led by the newly elected parliamentary candidate, Abanga Abdullahi, who told the NPP flag bearer about a vicious campaign being waged by opponents of the NPP that Kussasi settlers in the south would be sent to the north when an NPP government under Nana Akufo-Addo took over in 2016.

Ethnic agenda

Responding to that propaganda, Nana Akufo Addo said, “The NPP is not on any tribal agenda and has no tribal agenda. Every single group will be secure in Ghana. We are One Ghana and I am totally committed to working to ensure peace and unity for the Ghana project.”

He continued that “whether you are a Fante, Ga, Ewe, Akan, Kussasi, Mamprusi, Bimoba or whatever ethnic group you belong to, Ghana belongs to all of us. No ethnic group will be marginalised under Akufo Addo, and the track record of the NPP in this regard speaks for itself.”

Nana Akufo-Addo recalled the same propaganda against the NPP in the run-up to the 2000 elections, when political opponents stated that the NPP, under John Agyekum Kufuor, would marginalise and “sack some ethnic groups from Ghana.”

“In the end, it was all lies. President Kufuor oversaw one of the biggest transformations of Ghana in all parts of the country. No ethnic group was marginalised and I can assure all Ghanaians that under Akufo Addo, no ethnic group will be slighted in anyway whatsoever,” he added.

Financial loss

In another development, the NPP has rejected findings by the Judgement Debt Commission to the effect that former Attorney-General, Nana Akufo Addo, helped cause financial loss to the state in the sale of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) drill ship.

The ship was sold by President John Kufuor’s NPP administration in 2001 to defray a GH¢19.5 million judgement debt owed Societe-General Bank.

According to the commission, the failure of Nana Akufo Addo, who was Attorney-General at the time, to defend the state in court made Ghana pay a higher judgement debt.

But in a statement on Tuesday evening, the NPP denied that its flag bearer caused financial loss to the state.

“…At no point was any financial loss to the state occasioned by Nana Akufo-Addo’s actions in the matter,” the party stated in a statement signed by Communications Director, Nana Akomea.

“The Kufuor government should rather be commended for rescuing the GNPC sinking ship under the NDC and setting it back on its true course,” the statement said.
The NPP also accused the commission of making findings against Nana Akufo Addo without inviting him to respond.

“Nana Akufo Addo will, no doubt, fully respond to this issue when an official copy of the report of the Commission is made available,” the statement noted.
