Okudzeto Ablakwa outlines key plans for Foreign Ministry at vetting

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the nominee for Minister of Foreign Affairs, presented a set of reforms for the country’s foreign policy and diplomatic operations during his vetting session on January 31, 2025.

Mr Ablakwa, who has served as a key member of the Foreign Affairs Committee for eight years, outlined several priority areas he plans to address if confirmed.

One of his primary goals is to enhance economic diplomacy through bilateral agreements and create opportunities for migration that benefit both individuals and the country.

He stressed the importance of economic partnerships, particularly in sectors that will bring tangible benefits to Ghana and its people.

He stated that his focus would be on forging agreements that drive economic growth, creating opportunities for both businesses and citizens abroad.

In addition, he revealed plans to reform the passport regime. "We have over 70,000 passports that have not been collected," he noted.

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu intends to use technology to modernise passport processing, making it easier and faster for citizens to apply for and receive passports without the hassle of visiting the passport office.

This, he mentioned will include implementing systems that allow individuals to complete applications from the comfort of their homes.

Mr Ablakwa also mentioned his intention to address the problems caused by middlemen, who often delay passport issuance.

Another significant area of focus will be reforming the Foreign Service to make it more results-oriented, he stated.

He stressed the need for a “delivery unit” within the ministry, focused on ensuring that ambassadors and other diplomatic personnel deliver measurable results that directly benefit the country.
