The Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah has stated that it would be in the best interest of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) if their 2024 flagbearer and former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, does not seek re-election in the 2028 general elections.
He argued that the challenges surrounding Dr. Bawumia, which contributed to the party’s unexpected loss in the 2024 elections, are systemic in nature.
He believes it is necessary for Dr. Bawumia to step aside so that the party can properly rebuild.
“It will be in the best interest of the NPP if Bawumia voluntarily decides not to run again, rather than being pushed. If he makes that decision, the NPP can begin the rebuilding process earlier without him, because the issues he brings are systemic,” Musa Dankwa said on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana programme on Tuesday, February 18.

In response to the defeat, the NPP formed a committee in January 2025 to review the party’s performance in the election.
At a press conference in December 2024, National Chairman Stephen Ayesu Ntim acknowledged that the results were disappointing.
According to the Electoral Commission's official results, John Dramani Mahama, the candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), won with 6,328,397 votes (56.55 per cent of valid votes), defeating Dr. Bawumia of the NPP, who received 4,657,304 votes (41.61 per cent).
“We were very hopeful and positive, and our aim was to secure an emphatic victory at the polls. And we went very hard at it. As a party, we put in our best efforts in the campaign. I commend all members of the various campaign teams of the party, from polling stations to the national level, who also put in their very best in the competition," Mr Ntim said.
“There is no doubt that the outcome of the election was not what we hoped for. We may not have won the battle, but we haven’t lost the war on the quest for a better Ghana, shaped by the ideals and philosophies of the New Patriotic Party."
“The party will, in January 2025, set up an effective and objective election review committee to take a post-mortem into the outcome of the election," he added.
