PPP candidate promises surprise in Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election

The Parliamentary Candidate of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, Mr William Dowokpor has stated that he is going to pull a surprise in the upcoming by-election by clinching the seat with ease.

Mr Dowokpor, who is contesting the seat for the fourth consecutive time since 2008, is seeking to garner not less than 45 per cent of the valid votes to enable him to triumph over his contenders.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra, he said his confidence was informed by the “massive support” he had gathered from the constituents and some institutions in the constituency whom, he said, had expressed confidence in him to deliver.

He said that his interaction with the people as part of his campaign trail had revealed that the electorate were disappointed in the various candidates they had voted for over the years, hence their resolve to choose someone with a different party affiliation to champion their concerns this time round.

“The people are fed up with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). They are looking for something different this time round. They have fallen in love with my determination because I have been knocking on their doors for the past 10 years. They are confident that I am the best man to offer them the different leadership they are looking for”.

“We are projecting a turnout of about 50,000. Out of this, I am looking at polling not less than 19,000 votes, which represents 45 per cent. The NPP and NDC can split the remaining votes and that will earn me the victory,” Mr Dowokpor stated.

The seat

The seat became vacant following the demise of the NPP Member of Parliament (MP) and occupant, Mr Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko on Wednesday, November 21, 2018.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has set Thursday, January 31, 2019 for the by-election to elect a new legislator to represent the constituents until 2020.

Three political parties – the NPP, NDC, Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and the PPP have fielded candidates to contest the seat.

The wife of the late Kyeremateng Agyarko, Ms Lydia Alhassan and Mr Delali Kwasi Brempong are contesting on the ticket of the NPP and NDC respectively, while Clement Boadi is contesting for the LPG.

Policies

Touching on some of his policies, Mr Dowokpor stated that he was going to put together the “abundant” human capital and resources at the disposal of the constituency to build a “world class” constituency worthy of emulation.
