Randy Abbey was pro-NPP in the beginning - Gabby in farewell message to Good Morning Ghana host
Broadcaster and football administrator Dr Randy Abbey has bid farewell to Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana after a 23-year tenure, prompting reflections on his career and evolving political affiliations.
Mr. Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), shared insights into Mr Abbey’s political history during a tribute to the outgoing broadcaster.

According to Mr. Otchere-Darko in a farewell message on Metro TV, Mr Abbey was once closely aligned with the NPP and even considered as a parliamentary candidate for the party.
“Randy was very pro-NPP in the beginning,” Mr. Otchere-Darko remarked. “I remember he was even being drafted to stand for Parliament... In 2008, when I was doing a lot of work for the NPP with the Danquah Institute’s communications, Randy was part of us.”
Mr. Otchere-Darko also revealed that Mr Abbey had personal ties with John Dramani Mahama, the current President and a key figure in the then opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). “I remember him saying at that time, ‘It would be difficult for me if John Mahama becomes president because he is a very good friend of mine, and I’m very close to Ibrahim Mahama.’”
End of an era
Mr Abbey’s departure from Good Morning Ghana marks a significant moment in Ghanaian media. Metro TV aired a heartfelt video tribute describing his exit as “the end of an era.” His final appearance on the show was on Wednesday, 8 January 2025.
The broadcaster’s exit came after he resigned as Managing Director of Ignite Media Group, the parent company of Metro TV, Original TV, and Original FM, on December 31, 2024.
Beyond his media contributions, Mr Abbey has been a prominent figure in Ghanaian football, serving as an Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association and President of Kpando Hearts of Lions Football Club.
Mr Abbey’s contributions to media and sports have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Order of the Volta in 2006 and a Grand Medal for his role in Ghana’s historic FIFA World Cup qualification that same year.
As his career enters a new chapter, Mr. Otchere-Darko praised Mr Abbey’s personal and professional growth: “He’s a model to many, and wherever he’s going from here, I believe it is a better place. I wish him well.”
