Rashid Pelpuo pledges equity in job creation, supports 24-Hour Economy

The Minister Designate for Labour, Employment and Job Creation, Rashid Pelpuo, has pledged to create equitable job opportunities for Ghanaians and provide government support to businesses willing to adopt a 24-hour economy model.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee today, Mr Pelpuo expressed his commitment to ensuring fairness in employment practices, focusing on production-based economic policies.

He acknowledged that some businesses already operate 24-hour shifts and emphasised that, with proper government backing, more companies could follow suit.

"We will support businesses with the security and capacity needed to operate effectively, especially those facing challenges such as electricity costs," Mr Pelpuo stated.

He added that increasing production is essential for job creation and economic improvement, and the government would intervene to assist businesses in their efforts.

Mr Pelpuo also noted that the success of a 24-hour economy depends on market demand.

While private businesses would have the freedom to decide whether to operate round the clock, some government institutions might be required to adopt this policy.

On the issue of worker welfare, he addressed concerns about maternity leave and working conditions.

He strongly supported the recently passed Affirmative Action Law and expressed his commitment to discussing policies that would extend maternity leave for working mothers. "I personally support policies that promote fair wages and conditions for all workers," he affirmed.

Regarding public sector productivity, he acknowledged concerns and vowed to collaborate with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to develop policies ensuring that workers' pay reflects their level of productivity. "We need policies that ensure workers are not just committed but also productive," he stated.
