Sitting on fence no longer an option — George Andah

Nenyi George Andah, who has declared his intention to contest the Awutu Senya West seat in the 2016 elections on the ticket of New Patriotic Party, says sitting on the fence is no longer an option for the development of the country.

“Some of us have had to come out and take a stand for God and country, realising that sitting on the fence is no longer an option. I know we are no angels, but I can say that I will do what I have to do for God and country,”  he stated in a note to OccupyGhana to formally communicate his decision to step back from the core leadership of the group..

This follows his formal decision to contest the parliamentary primaries of the NPP, and if he should win, the upcoming parliamentary elections.

In the note to OccupyGhana, he said, “I do not come to this decision lightly,” adding that he was inspired by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s quotation: “I am in politics because like many Ghanaians of my generation and the youth in general, I refuse to accept that what we are witnessing today in terms of our economic and political governance and the attendant marginalisation, joblessness and suffering of so many of our people, is the best that Ghana can do. I refuse to accept this state of affairs for our great country.”

According to Nenyi Andah, he had never denied the party he supports and votes for, or the presidential candidate he believes in and the party whose ideologies he endorses.

Yet, he admitted that “ the non-partisan OccupyGhana gave me the opportunity to identify with, and be a part of, a strong group of responsible Ghanaians who believe in good governance and are fighting for Ghana to develop to its true socio-economic potential, irrespective of our various individual party preferences or biases (and even the lack of such preferences and biases).”

He said that OccupyGhana yearned to see a Ghana where right and wrong were assessed and corrected by people who put the nation first, and come from all persuasions - political, religious, ethnic, etc., and he was proud to have been given the opportunity to serve in OccupyGhana’s leadership.

Relatedly, OccupyGhana has said that it was receiving the communication from Nenyi Andah at a time when Ghanaians had to grapple with extreme discomfort, lowered productivity, the ever-rising rate of inflation, absolutely inexplicable power cuts, a continuous loss of their purchasing power, limited access to essential services such as quality education and healthcare, and poor quality of service provided by utility companies, among others, and with many companies and entrepreneurs being driven out of business.

According to the group, since its inception, it has been fighting for good governance, good leadership direction and proper economic management to ensure that Ghana develops to its true social and economic potentials.

“OccupyGhana firmly believes a lack of good leadership is Ghana's biggest problem. Good institutions are important, but we need strong leaders to build those strong institutions,” it stated.

The group also said that “we are therefore pleased that one of our members has taken a bold step towards further participation in the development of our nation by entering active politics.”

OccupyGhana believes that across the different divides and wedges that 'separate' Ghanaians, we all want to see positive change and to ensure that Ghana develops to its full economic potential!

OccupyGhana therefore believes that George’s decision to enter into frontline politics opens up a new chapter for the credibility of OccupyGhana, as George's sterling leadership qualities and principles, which have helped them so far, are hopefully now going to be made available to Ghana at another level: Parliament.

We wish our colleague, George, Godspeed and success as he opens another chapter in his life to Occupy for God and country, the group concluded.
