Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has admonished members of the NPP to put a stop to the current infighting and acrimony and rather focus on how the party can recapture power in 2016.

‘‘Nana Akufo Addo should win power for us in 2016. NPP is the biggest party in the country and the average Ghanaian is looking up to us to deliver a change next year,” he said

Former President Kufuor gave the advice when he addressed the 15th Extraordinary National Delegates’ Conference of the party, which ended in Sunyani last Saturday.

There was only one message on the lips of the delegates and supporters who thronged the Coronation Park to listen to speeches delivered by their leaders as they yelled intermittently, “We want change, we want change.”

The well-attended conference, which began at 11: 30 a.m., ended at exactly 4: 00 p.m.

Other key speakers at the conference included the flag bearer of the party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and his running mate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumiah, the Acting

National Chairman, Mr Freddie Blay, the Acting National Secretary, Mr John Boadu, and a member of the party’s Council of Elders, Madam Ama Busia.

‘Close ranks’
Former President Kufuor said there was the need for the party members to close their ranks “because we need everybody.”

He said the party needed the votes of everybody and called for an end to suspicions among it members.

“We tend to suspect ourselves too much and this will not help our quest for victory.”

“Once we show unity of purpose, our party will become beautiful and attractive to even NDC members who are also gnashing their teeth under the economic mess created by the government.”

He explained that under such a mess, members of even the NDC wanted a change “and we are the only party that can provide the change.”

Atmosphere at conference
Obviously happy about the number of delegates and supporters who filled the park, President Kufuor said the atmosphere reminded him of 2000 when the party won the general election.

He said the charged atmosphere was an indication that Nana Akufo-Addo was capable of obtaining between 54 and 56 per cent to win the election in 2016.

“But first let us work together. Let us show the country that we are ready for change ourselves. We must tell the people how we are going to change their lives.”

He called on the campaign team to strengthen the flag bearer and his running mate by solving problems internally.

“If we do that we will sense victory ahead of the general election in 2016,” he said, cautioning that the party “will be damned by Ghanaians if we do not work together to win power.”

“Power is there for us. Ours is to go for it. If we fail, Ghanaians will damn us,”former president Kufuor said.

Achievements
Mr Kufuor enumerated the projects of his government, saying that within four years he was able to take Ghana out of the economic mess created by the NDC.

“I was able to transform the country into a middle-income one in another four years without trampling on the rights of Ghanaians,” he said.
