Tamale police beef up security at Huudu Yahaya’s residence

The Tamale police have beefed up security at the residence of a former vice chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Huudu Yahaya, following claims that a youth group was planning to burn down his house.

According to the supposed group, Alhaji Yahaya betrayed their cause when he decided to withdraw from the national chairmanship race of the party at its congress in Kumasi last Saturday without any consultations.

Even though no youth group in the metropolis has claimed responsibility for the alleged plans to attack the house, the police have since last Saturday provided protection over the facility that is located at Sagnarigu, a suburb of Tamale.

Police

According to the Northern Region Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Ebenezer Tetteh, moments after the announcement was made at the congress ground in Kumasi that Alhaji Yahaya had withdrawn his candidature, the police received intelligence report that the said group was planning to embark on such a diabolic act.

“Based on the intelligence report, we decided to place a 24-hour police guard at the residence since Saturday,” Mr Tetteh stated.

He further indicated that even though nobody had been arrested in connection with the alleged threat on the house, “we are still monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of the property.”

The officer admonished all those behind the alleged threat to refrain from it since the police would treat any such suspect as a criminal, who would face the full rigours of the law.

Alhaji Yahaya withdrew from the chairmanship contest a few minutes to the commencement of the election.

The Master of Ceremony (MC) for the occasion and the Minister for Labour Relations, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, who made the announcement, did not assign any reason why the former vice chairman was stepping down from the hotly contested race.

Alhaji Yahaya decided to contest the position months before the congress and had traversed the length and breadth of the country with his team of enthusiastic young men and women canvassing for votes.

Contest

In a landslide victory, the National Co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Kofi Portuphy, unseated the incumbent National Chairman, Dr Kwabena Adjei.

Mr Portuphy polled a massive 2,457 votes to win the National Chairmanship position. Dr Kwabena Adjei has held the position for two terms, polled 316.
