The 24 will contest 10 out of 11 constituencies in the region, with nominations yet to be opened for the Nadowli-Kaleo Constituency.

Party stalwarts in the region said the delay in opening nominations for Nadowli-Kaleo was strategic, perhaps given the dominance that the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mr Alban Bagbin, has brought to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) as occupant of the seat since 1993.

A copy of the report on the vetting of parliamentary aspirants sighted by the Daily Graphic said, "All 24 persons were recommended to contest in the primaries. Vetting went without any incident, and all aspirants conducted themselves as true party members".

Dery goes unopposed

Former Deputy Attorney General and former Member of Parliament, Ambrose Dery of the Nandom Constituency and Jesse Sung Kpieta of the Jirapa Constituency are the only unopposed candidates heading into the June 13 primaries.

Others in the race are Amidu Chinnia and Ridwan Abass Daud for Sissala East; Patrick Adams, Braimah Alhassan Kantong and George Hikah Benson for Sissala West; Anthony Karbo and Joseph Donteah Bilson for Lawra; and Adams Nuhu Timbile and Kuusongno Daniel Dari for Wa West.

The rest are Bayon Godfrey Tangu, Daud Ahmed Hudeen and Yakubu Salifu for Wa East; Bagonluri Lwanga Saanyeh and Issah Abdul-Majeeb for Daffiama/Bussie/Issa; Bright Yelviel-Dong Baligi, Delle Donpaala Stephen and John Dough Baloro for Lambussie; and Bashie Janet Bibii, Hadi Bawa, Issahaku Moomin Tahiru, Mahama Ishaq and Osman Abdul-Hamid for Wa Central.

The report on the vetting process, which was chaired by Dr Clifford A. Bramah, also said "All aspirants conducted themselves well and were encouraged to preach unity among their supporters and to ensure that their individual campaigns do not result in any forms of conflict".

New appointments

Meanwhile, the Upper West regional executive of the NPP has appointed Hafiz Bin Salih, regional First Vice Chairman, as acting regional secretary following the resignation of Bright Baligi to enable him to contest the parliamentary primaries in the Lambussie Constituency, according to a letter signed by the regional party Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar A. Rahman.

The executive also appointed Madam Hycintha Abatu Gyan the regional Second Vice chairperson, as the region's representative on the National Council in the stead of Mr Bagili.
