Mr Emmanuel Wilson — Aspiring General Secretary of the People’s National Convention

'United Nkrumaist front long overdue'

A General Secretary aspirant of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Mr Emmanuel Wilson, has said a united Nkrumaist front to contest and win national elections is long overdue.

He has, therefore, welcomed the moves by the People’s National Convention (PNC ) and the Convention People’s Party (CPP) to constitute all elected offices of the two parties into one national congress to elect national officers to steer affairs of both parties for the 2016 elections.

Mr Wilson, who is the National Organiser of the PNC and convener of Unity Talks Committee of the PNC and CPP, told the Daily Graphic in an interview in Accra on Tuesday.

Background

The leadership of the PNC and CPP have signed an agreement to constitute one formidable and invincible Nkrumaist party to prosecute the agenda to win the 2016 general election.

In line with this, the chairmen and general secretaries of the two parties have agreed to organise one national congress to elect national officers who will administer the affairs of both parties.

A similar  national congress will be organised to elect the presidential candidate. Details of these processes will be determined by the joint electoral committees of both parties.

Third force

According to Mr Wilson, “This is good news  because the two parties - the PNC and CPP — will serve as a third force Ghanaians are yearning for in the country’s democratic dispensation’’.

He, therefore, appealed to the leadership of the two parties to promptly submit the agreed proposals to their various National Executive Committees (NEC) for endorsement.

He said the proposal could, therefore, become a binding document to guide the two parties into the 2016 elections.

The aspiring General Secretary urged both parties to not repeat the mistakes of the past when the unity talks could not be finalised before the 2008 and 2012 elections.

He said it behoved the leadership of both parties to present the Nkrumaist front as a big attraction to convince the  electorate to join the Nkrumaist family.

Technical details

Mr  Wilson disclosed that the Unity Talks Committee had already completed the technical details of the plan to unite the two parties with proposals submitted to the two chairmen of both parties for onward submission to the various NECs.

“This time around, the Nkrumaist parties could not afford to disappoint Ghanaians with any feet-dragging, since Ghanaians have no option but to vote for any party that has positioned itself well as a serious political party poised for power to alleviate their suffering,” Mr Wilson stated.

Dwindling fortunes

Concerning the electoral fortunes of both the PNC and the CPP, Mr Wilson lamented that  the performance of  the main Nkrumaist parties in elections from 1992 to date had revealed that their fortunes were dwindling.

He mentioned the election results of 2008 and 2012 as showing that the two parties had been retrogressing as PNC ‘s  four seats in 2008 dropped to one in 2012 while the CPP had only one seat in the 275-member Parliament.
