“Violence has no place in our schools” – Zanetor mourns Kinbu SHS student

The Member of Parliament for Klottey-Korle, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has condemned the fatal stabbing of a student at Kinbu Senior High School in central Accra, describing the incident as “tragic” and “senseless.”

In a statement issued on Friday, the MP expressed deep sorrow over the incident, which occurred on Thursday, 31 July, and called for swift investigations by the Ghana Police Service to ensure justice is served.

“Violence has no place in our schools! Our children must feel safe in their learning environments,” Dr Agyeman-Rawlings said.

She urged education and security authorities to treat the incident as a wake-up call, warning that school safety protocols must be urgently reassessed and strengthened.

Shock in the capital

The stabbing, which reportedly occurred during a confrontation on school premises, has sent shockwaves through the Kinbu SHS community and beyond. Located near the heart of Accra, Kinbu SHS is one of Ghana’s oldest second-cycle institutions and serves hundreds of students from the capital and surrounding areas.

The Ghana Police Service has yet to issue a detailed statement on the circumstances surrounding the attack, but reports suggest that tensions had been rising among students in recent weeks.

Call for reforms

Dr Agyeman-Rawlings, who also has a background in public health and humanitarian work, emphasised the need for a multi-sectoral response. She pledged to work closely with the Ghana Education Service (GES), school leadership, local authorities, and security agencies to improve safety measures and mental health support in schools across her constituency.

“This tragedy must be a wake-up call for all stakeholders,” she added.

Her comments come amid growing concerns about student safety and mental well-being in Ghanaian schools. Over the past year, there have been several isolated incidents involving violence among students, sparking national debates on discipline, security, and youth mental health.

Dr Agyeman-Rawlings extended her condolences to the family of the deceased, as well as to the students, staff, and broader Kinbu SHS community.
