We've done a lot to deserve re-election - Mahama
On the second day of his re-election campaign tour of the Western Region, President John Mahama inspected the Aboadze sea defence project and said the project was yet another demonstration of the government's unquestionable record.
"I can beat my chest and say that this is the best sea defence wall in the country," the President said while addressing the people of the area after the inspection.
"We've done a lot"
President Mahama said there was no question about the government's impressive delivery.
"If you look at the Green Book, you can see that we have done a lot, " he told the predominantly NDC gathering.
He said but for the almost one year wasted as a result of the presidential election petition, more could have been done.
Livelihood empowerment
Earlier, addressing supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC ) at Mpohor, President Mahama said he would focus on economic transformation and livelihood empowerment in his second term.
He said the initiatives would have as their roots income-generation activities, including skills development, and added that the government was looking at self-employment as an avenue for the youth to earn incomes.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP ) won the parliamentary election in the Mpohor Constituency in the 2012 election but the NDC believes it is ready to grab the seat this time.
The President's arrival at Mpohor threw hordes of supporters of the party onto the streets
President Mahama called on the electorate to vote massively for the NDC on December 7, 2016.
Development is a process
President Mahama explained that development was a process and not a one-off activity.
He said the government would, therefore, continue to put in measures to improve the wellbeing of the people.
He urged the electorate to continue to have confidence in him as he would not deviate from the path of development.
President Mahama told the cheering crowd that the Benson-Mpohor road had been placed under the cocoa roads programme for reconstruction, and added that the procurement process for the project was underway.
Five kilometres of Mpohor town roads have been included in the project for tarring.
President Mahama also promised that the Health Centre at Mpohor would be upgraded to a polyclinic.
Elubo
The President had earlier last Tuesday addressed scores of NDC supporters at Elubo in the Ellembelle Constituency, where he said the NDC was committed to conducting its campaign peacefully.
"We in NDC are not all-die-be-die," he said to cheers from the crowd.
He said it was those who knew they would lose the election who were threatening and harassing the Electoral Commission.
President Mahama told the people that his government would not take Elubo for granted, particularly so as the area had stood solidly behind the NDC over the years.
Aboadze sea defence project
The Aboadze sea defence project in the Shama District is a critical lives and property protection project. The first phase covered two kilometres while the second phase would cover 2.5km.
It would protect the West African Gas Pipeline and the Aboadze Thermal Plant from erosion.
The Aboadze Thermal Plant was, prior to the coastal protection project, being threatened by tidal waves which came very close to the plant.
Extreme coastal erosion by the tidal waves had caused so much damage that the power plant and the high tension cables were under severe threat, a development that necessitated the need to protect what was left of the land.
