Winner takes all politics creates tension - Rev Aboagye

The General Overseer of the Victorious Light Chapel International, Rev Ishmael Adjei Aboagye has stated that the “winner takes all” politics which is being practiced in the country creates lots of tension that is not healthy for democracy to thrive.

He said this type of politics has made our politics a “do or die” affair where politicians resort to anything just to ensure they win power.

“I hope our democracy would therefore grow to a stage where maybe at least 20 per cent of the political power would go to the opposition,” he said.

Rev Aboagye said this at the 13th anniversary celebration of the church.

The anniversary which was dedicated to the country was on the theme “it shall be well with this nation”.

He said the church decided to dedicate its 13th anniversary to the country because it was in an election year and it should therefore be about the nation and not the church.

“How many are we in this church as compared to the entire population of Ghana? The nation is bigger than the church,” he stated.

He said the church must think about the spirituality of the nation and how God would give the nation grace in such an election year.

“We should pray that all politicians get the strength, wisdom, energy and the resources they need to enable them go through this election successfully and fairly so that all shall accept the results. We are starting today, we will continually pray till the time of the election because prayer is a seed, “he said.

“We need divine intervention because some were born to kill and destroy and the church is an ambassador of Christ. We must work towards peace and practice it as well. We might not agree on certain things but that should not divide us,” he added.

He believed the nation needs a team of people regardless of which party are from who have a common destiny to move the nation forward.

“People say we have one nation so we should protect it but am saying we have one personality and we will not put three people in one casket and bury them so each and every one should look at what he or she is doing to promote peace. You should ask yourself that what you are doing, will it protect lives or destroy lives,” he mentioned.

The NDC Parliamentary candidate for the Weija/Gbawe constituency, Ms Obuobia Darko-Opoku who was there to grace the anniversary also called on Ghanaians to see themselves as one people despite the differences in political opinions.

She said all the political parties had the aim of transforming this nation and the only difference was the approach.

She said politics should therefore not divide the nation.
