Winning election 2016 : NDC communicators tasked to go beyond radio debates

The National Communication Officer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Solomon Nkansah, has tasked the communication team of the party to go beyond “radio debates” and interact directly with Ghanaians.

According to Mr Nkansah, the party’s ability to retain power in the 2016 General Election depended largely on how well it would communicate its agenda to Ghanaians.

At a capacity-building workshop in Accra yesterday for the Greater Accra Regional communication officers of NDC, Mr Nkansah said the party would not “allow any communication officer to go to sleep ahead of the 2016 elections”.

“As a communication officer, it is your prime goal to efficiently explain to the public the operations and activities of the party in a way that will convince them of the government’s agenda,” he said.

The workshop was on the theme: “Winning election 2016 from victory to victory; the role of the NDC constituency communication officers”.

The resource persons for  the occasion included the Deputy Minister of Communication, Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

The training was, however, not open to the media.

NDC determined

According to him, the success of every thriving organisation depended heavily on the operations of the communication team, stressing that communicators “do the chunk of the work in every political party”.

“You must understand that your role requires you to be very knowledgeable and attentive since you are the first person to explain to the people the policies and programmes of the party,” Mr Nkansah said.

He observed that the NDC, ahead of the 2016 general election, would come up with efficient means of channelling the party’s vision to Ghanaians.

“This time around, the work will not be restricted to radio and television, we will do more with the grass roots and properly inform the public about the quality of policies the government is putting in place,” he said.

One thing the NDC, especially the communication team, will not do, he said, would be not to sit down and watch any political party to down-play the achievement of President John Mahama.

Essence of workshop

In his welcoming address, the Greater Accra Regional Communication Officer, Mr Jerry Johnson, said the rationale behind the workshop was to build the capacity of constituency communication officers of the party.

“It is also to use the platform as an opportunity to introduce the Annual Action Plan of the Greater Accra Regional Communication outfit to primary stakeholders,” he said.

Mr Johnson said over the past months, the communication teams within the region had engaged themselves in upgrading their communication skills with the goal to sharpen their skills.
