Women’s League 2nd Round kicks off Saturday

After a two-week break, the National Women's League (NWL) resumes this weekend for the second round as the 16 clubs continue their quest to be crowned as champions.

Ahead of the start of the second round, the 16 participating clubs have been presented with some equipment from FIFA as part of the world football governing body's support for the NWL.

The items, made up of jerseys, footballs, shin guards, boots, bibs, ball bags, goalkeepers' jersey and gloves, were presented to the teams by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) president, Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi, with assistance from the Women's League Board (WLB) Chairperson, Leanier Addy, and Nanabanyin Eysion, a member of the GFA Emergency Committee.

In addition to the items, the GFA president also announced that each of the clubs would be given GH¢5,000 as financial support until a sponsorship deal the FA was pursuing for the league was secured.

He expressed the hope that the presentation of the items and the cash would further encourage the clubs to put in their best to make the second round of the competition as interesting and competitive as the first round.

At the end of the first round, defending champions, Sekondi Hasaacas, were in the lead in the southern zone while Prisons Ladies topped the northern zone and both hope to maintain that position as they try to overcome the fierce challenge from the other contenders.

Hasaacas Ladies will be the guests of Police Ladies while Immigration Ladies host Soccer Intellectuals in the topliners. In the other games, Bafana Ladies will host Halifax Ladies, with LadyStrikers' game against Samaria Ladies completing the southern zone fixtures.

In the northern zone, the match between the league leaders, Prisons Ladies and the defending zonal champions, Ampem Darkoa Ladies, at the Ohene Ameyaw Park at Techiman tops the billing.

The other games are: Subayo Golden Ladies v Fabulous Ladies, Northern Ladies v Real Upper Ladies and Ashtown Ladies v Lepo Ladies.
