McDan Open Championship: Na-Adrago survives Beninois scare

Former All Africa Games doubles gold medalist, Wisdom Na-Adrago, survived a scare to progress to the next stage of the ongoing McDan West African Open tennis competition after a hard-fought 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Benin's Theophile Sedogo.

The clash between Na-Adrago, who won gold at the 2015 AAG in Congo Brazzaville and his Beninois opponent lasted a gruelling two hours and 25 minutes under the scorching sun at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Setodji confident of winning top McDan Open top prize

Men's top seed Tomas Setodji has already decided how he will spend the $3,000 cash prize if he wins the 2017 McDan West African Open Championship.

The confident Togolese says he came to Ghana to win the competition and will leave no stone unturned in his bid to win the 2017 McDan Open Championsip because he will use the money to fund his career as a budding tennis prospect.

Hearts, Kotoko battle for President’s Cup, GH¢50,000 

There will be a whopping GH¢50,000 cash prize at stake for the winner when bitter rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante clash for the Ghana@60 President's Cup in May.

According to the organisers, the latest instalment of the longstanding rivalry between Ghana's most successful clubs will be held over two legs, on May 1 and May 28 at the Accra Sports Stadium and Kumasi Sports Stadium respectively.

Reverend E.D. Nikoi, the president of the Netball Association of Ghana (NAG) says lack of funds has seriously affected the progress of the sport in the country despite the promise it holds to make inroads at the international level.

According to Reverend Nikoi, who has headed the sport for over two decades, the national team has not been able to participate in international competitions because the association is not able to raise funds for that purpose and the support from government, the owner of the national team, has also not been forthcoming.

The "Ghana: 60 Years On" Planning Committee has announced a GH₵50,000 cash prize for the winner of a two-leg match involving rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

Initially, the two teams were expected to receive only GH₵50,000 each as appearance fees for the "Ghana: 60 Years On" President's Cup slated for May 1 and May 28 at the Accra Sports Stadium and Kumasi Sports Stadium respectively.

Setodji advances in McDan Open 

Top-seed Thomas Yaka Kofi Setodji yesterday made an impressive start to the 2017 McDan Open Championship, outclassing his Ghanaian counterpart Kwabena Ofosu Bamfo 6-1, 6-1 to progress to the last 16 stage of the tournament.

The power of the serves and the returns of the 20-year old Togolese were too hot for Bamfo, which sent him cruising to victory at the Accra Sports Stadium court for the first match of the main draw against Bamfo, a brother of former McDan Open champion, George Darko.
